For the last several months my sister and I have been hand making quilts for family members. She actually does the hand quilting when they are all pieced and ready to be hand basted to the batting for warmth and the lining to cover the batting and the back of the pieced together quilt. The process involves cutting thousands of pieces that have to be sewn together to make the overall design of each quilt. For example this is one of the 20 blocks that will make up the quilt we are currently working on. Each block has 48 pieces that had to be hand cut and then sewn together.
Each star is unique in that though they all have the same eight colors in them, all the fabrics are different so that each star is not exactly the same. And though our grandmothers cut each piece of their quilts by hand, nowadays they have created a rotary cutter with a very sharp blade like the one I was using today. And because the blade is so very sharp one never puts it down without retracting the blade. However, as I was working on a design for another quilt today, my rotary cutter flew out of my hand as I was trying to retract the blade and landed blade first in the top of my right foot. Needless to say lots and lots of blood began to pour out of my foot and because we couldn’t seem to get it stopped, James called 911 who walked me through what I should do until the fire department and the paramedics arrived on the scene. Here is the portion of the block I was working on at the time.
After the paramedics artived and got the bleeding stopped at least for the moment, they recommended that I go on to an Urgent Care facility or an Emergency Room. So off we went, and hours later I came home with stitches in my foot and a new tetanus shot. And the point in my telling you all this is that I’m just too tired to read emails, comments, or posts tonight. I pray that all of you had a marvelous and less accidentally eventful day. I’m not in any pain at the moment but I am very tired as I lost a fair amount of blood. Below is a photo of said foot complete with its stitches. They still hadn’t cleaned all the dried blood off my foot and so my foot appears to be very blotchy. After it was all said and done though, they did wash both my feet since I cannot get the wounded one wet for several days. Love, Natalie

I love these quilts! They are heirlooms. I have several antique ones made by my husband’s Aunt Minn and treasure them.

Yes we grew up with my grandmother’s quilts and we loved and used them so much we finally wore them all out after all 70 years of daily use. 😊❤️

Ironically, as I am reading this I am listening to my sweet wife sigh, mumble to herself and stitch away on her first quilt…to be finished tomorrow…I hope you mend quickly fumble fingers….I change those blades for my wife and they are sharp!!!

Ouch indeed! I worked with a scalpel in page make-up for years (Newspaper) and had a few near misses – let the satisfaction of producing nice quilts overrule! 😎Blessings.

Oops. Sorry about the foot Natalie. Quilt looks beautiful. My last set of stitches were in my thumb when I was using a knife from my seafaring days to cut through cable ties holding the netting around my redcurrants! The knife slipped. We were both in the garden at the time and Marilyn (who used to be a nurse) looked at the blood pumping from my hand and calmly asked why I hadn’t used the kitchen scissors! (I thought I would get into trouble if I did.)

Oh sweetie! That’s a terrible accident. I hope you have healed since this post! The quilt is gorgeous by the way. My grand mother use to make them. She passed away at 99 before she completed the one for me, so I have always appreciated the hard work and dedication that goes into creating them. Much love ❤

No. My aunt took it. She took everything when my grand mother passed. There was a feud. She took everything. It’s okay though. I have my memories 🙂

Having lived in the far north for many a year beautiful quilts have always been around, now living in Mexico our duvet has been stored away for that special occasion. Edredon is the Spanish name for it, buy alas it too has gone the way of the electric blanket. ¡Ay! is right, but I trust you’ll be up and dancing soon.

Ouch indeed Natalie, accidents happen and yes I’m in the wars too as you know, rest is best for both of us so it’s good that we are sitting down when we Blog but my pain relievers make me tired as no doubt yours does too but at least they help lesson the pain even if not all of it. Thankfully I have much less pain today than yesterday even without them, I hope you will feel better soon too.
Now something more pleasant to focus on, I really love the quilts you are making, the Stars are so beautiful, you are both very Creative, well done.
Blessings – Anne.

I admire those who quilt. So much work and precision goes into it but I will say the results make all that work worth it in the end. Sorry about your foot but the important thing is everything ended well and I’m believing you are better now 🙂
