The sun, with all those planets
revolving around it and dependent on it,
can still ripen a bunch of grapes
as if it had nothing else in the universe to do.
~Galileo Galilei
The Sun
Have you ever seen
anything
in your life
more wonderful
than the way the sun,
every evening,
relaxed and easy,
floats toward the horizon
and into the clouds or the hills,
or the rumpled sea,
and is gone–
and how it slides again
out of the blackness,
every morning,
on the other side of the world,
like a red flower
streaming upward on its heavenly oils,
say, on a morning in early summer,
at its perfect imperial distance–
and have you ever felt for anything
such wild love–
do you think there is anywhere, in any language,
a word billowing enough
for the pleasure
that fills you,
as the sun
reaches out,
as it warms you
as you stand there,
empty-handed–
or have you too
turned from this world–
or have you too
gone crazy
for power,
for things?
~Mary Oliver
…May the Lord bless his land with the precious dew from heaven above and with the deep waters that lie below; with the best the sun brings forth and the finest the moon can yield; with the choicest gifts of the ancient mountains and the fruitfulness of the everlasting hills… ~Deuteronomy 33:13-15 ✝

Just beautiful N. I really like what Mary Oliver says. Does she have a book or some type of collection of writings? I would like to read more of her stuff. And you know I’m a huge fan of the art. Hehehe. Loooooooooovvvvvveeee mixed-media.
I’m a huge fan of the sun. I need it. Really. The best I’ve ever been emotionally was when we lived in India. It was sunny all the time and it did wonders for the serotonin levels in my brain.
Love and hugs N. Hope you’re doing well. How’s your knee? And your feet?

Yes, she has several books of poetry and I have one of them. Go look on Amazon and you’ll find a list of them. My knee is my knee, feeble and ailing, but it’s only 4 weeks and 3 days now until the surgery! My left foot is hurting more but that’s because of all the the hobbling I have to do on that knee. All will be well soon. Thanks for asking. Hope all is well with you. I enjoyed your post tonight. Hugs, N 🙂 ❤

Another beautiful post on one of my favourite topics. You did the sun justice, and that’s never an easy task, so I thank you for all your wonderful words, and for introducing me to Mary Oliver. She’s a fine writer. As the time draws near for your surgery I hope you’re managing to get through everything. I continue to pray for you, and send you best wishes.

Thank you, David. You are so very welcome. Another blogger introduced me to Oliver and I was so taken with here that I’ve bought one of her anthologies of poetry. She is indeed a wonderful writer and if I’m not mistaken was and/or is poet laureate for the US. I’m so glad you enjoy her poetry as well. I’m counting the days and hanging in there, David. I hope your procedure goes well tomorrow. Hugs, N 🙂 ❤

I have had my days and nights all turned around for a long time. I keep trying to straighten them out, but haven’t been very successful. I haven’t been outside in a long time. Yesterday it was warm, and didn’t take advantage of it. It is supposed to be warm here in Arkansas again today. I am going to try to take advantage of that.
I loved this post. Thank you so much for sharing it.
Hugs and Blessings,
Theresa

Oh, you’ll get a chuckle out of this. I’ve even been known to get out and work in the yard after dark. Our backyard lights create some areas where I can see well and on warm nights, I sometimes carry on a bit after dark. My husband keeps asking me if he shouldn’t just put up a tent out there so I can go ahead and sleep there. And ya know, if the world weren’t such a scary place these days, I might just do that every now and again. I do hope you get your days and night straightened out soon. Much love, N ❤
