742. As for marigolds, poppies, hollyhocks, and valorous sunflowers, we shall never have a garden without them… ~Henry Ward Beecher

That we find a crystal or a poppy beautiful
means that we are less alone, that we are
more deeply inserted into existence
than the course of a single life
would lead us to believe.

POPPIES
by Mary Oliver
The poppies send up their
orange flares; swaying
in the wind, their congregations
are a levitation

of bright dust, of thin
and lacy leaves.
There isn’t a place
in this world that doesn’t

DSC_0029

sooner or later drown
in the indigos of darkness,
but now, for a while,
the roughage

DSC_0006

shines like a miracle
as it floats above everything
with its yellow hair.
Of course nothing stops the cold,

DSC_0138

black, curved blade
from hooking forward—
of course
loss is the great lesson.

DSC_0069

But I also say this: that light
is an invitation
to happiness,
and that happiness,

DSC_0101

when it’s done right,
is a kind of holiness,
palpable and redemptive.
Inside the bright fields,

DSC_0056

touched by their rough and spongy gold,
I am washed and washed
in the river
of earthly delight—

DSC_0030

and what are you going to do—
what can you do
about it—
deep, blue night?

Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. ~Psalm 37:4   ✝

**These are all poppies grown in my yard from seed I sowed last fall, and as Beecher said, I shall never have a garden without them because they wash me in a river of earthly delight as Oliver puts it.

Honey Bees

honey bee 6

Did you know that it can take bees as many as 5,000 trips to flowers, to produce 1 teaspoon of honey? Bees are fascinating creatures, and a lot has been written about them, so this is just a brief overview. There are more than 20,000 species of bees but only a small number of them are classified as true honey bees, and are under the genus of Apis. The study of honey bees is known as apiology.

honey bee 2Most know that honey bees live in colonies. There can be hundreds of thousands of bees in a single colony, with three different types of bees living there. The male bees are known as drones. They are produced from unfertilized eggs so they only have the DNA of the queen. Apparently the queen is able selectively choose which eggs to fertilize. Drones are large, with large eyes, used to locate queens during mating…

Nonsense, you say,
Why that’s right up my alley.
It adds spice to life
and soothes the strife.

Onomatopoeia imitates a sound
that it describes with nonsensical words
while alliteration repeats the same letter or sound
at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.
And so today after photographing flowers with amazing colors
I thought it might be fun to let you see with both your eyes and ears.

This Is Your Soul Talking

This is your soul talking;
Do you not hear
the distant longing
that is telling you your truth?

All that you are
All that you are
created to BE
Is buried in the
treasure of your heartsong.

Open this gift
and bring it to Light,
to shine your brilliance
well upon the way.

No other creature
can take the place of you;
to be the presence
of love in who you are.

In any moment
you can choose
to set her free ~
to soar in majesty
and holy awe.

740. The only noise now was the rain, pattering softly with the magnificent indifference of nature for the tangled passions of humans. ~Sherwood Smith

The richness of the rain made me feel safe and protected;
I have always considered the rain to be healing—
a blanket—the comfort of a friend.
Without at least some rain in any given day,
or at least a cloud or two on the horizon,
I feel overwhelmed by the information of sunlight
and yearn for the vital, muffling gift of falling water.
~Douglas Coupland

Rain, what can I say of  you
that hasn’t already been voiced by others?
But how could I ever remain silent in your presence
since you touch a chord somewhere deep within me?
For in your “magnificent indifference of nature”
you’re the gift that embues everything with life and vitality.
You, a healing elixir, comfort like a friend
as you travel continuously around the globe
falling
through space between heaven and earth.
You are mercy and grace in liquidity
set in motion in the beginning by Yahweh
who created you as well as all else here below.
Holy, holy, holy are you who refresh and cleanse by
removing dust and ashes
from earthly strivings.
Would that you, too, could wash away
humanity’s
hatred and the wanton destruction
of that which you come to bless and save.

Barefoot In The Sacred

in the sacred

Step outside the garden door,

with bare feet on cold concrete,

and after the realisation that it’s not so bad,
you can bear it,
move on to the dew wet morning grass,
to the uncut patch,
where the secret life within grounds you
to the heart of your heart,
to the world heart,
to the one sacred whole where you know yourself in everything,
where everything has it’s peace,
and even inanimate objects
find their rest in the sacred.

739. My head is bursting with the joy of the unknown. My heart is expanding a thousand fold. ~Rumi, translated by Shahram Shiva

sight must be

May your inner eye
See through the surfaces
and glean the real presence
Of everything that meets you.

May your soul beautify
The desire of your eyes
That you might glimpse
The infinity that hides
In the simple sights
That seem worn
To your usual eyes.

~Excerpts from a blessings for
the senses by John O’Donohue

The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. ~Matthew 6:22   ✝

Listen. Listen to the quiet word walking your way on the evening air,
slipping in around the edges of your reason, speaking in whispers like the wind
lifting the curtains to come into your room. Listen carefully, listen intentionally,
be still and listen, for the voice of the Spirit speaks in stillness not in shouts,
calls to you in soft sounds not the clamor of the crowd. God knows your name.
God seeks you out, answering your prayers, offering you wisdom,
showing you where to turn. Listen to learn, to understand, for the holy is most eloquent
in silence. Someone is speaking to you, speaking in the quiet hours of your soul. Listen
