Babies, little green babies, miracles of soil and seed are bursting forth from earth’s womb even as winter approaches. And as always I find the potential for life that exists in something as small and seemingly lifeless as a seed mind boggling. Equally astounding is the fact that stored within each tiny seed are enough nutrients to spark life in the seedling that will ultimately grow from the embryo, an embryo which has two points of growth. From one end of a particle sometimes as small as a speck of dust emerges a stem and from the other emerge roots. As if all this is not enough to inspire complete and utter amazement, the process of germination certainly does. Germination is a reactivation of metabolic pathways that depends on the right temperatures, the right amount of oxygen and water, and sometimes the right amount of darkness and light. But wait all this is not really the best part! The most impressive thing is that the entire process of seed to plant to seed, from beginning to end, can and frequently does occur without a human hand ever entering the process.

  1. Truly amazing!!!—how else could such come into being—could a big bang coupled by the mish mash of primordial ooze so brilliantly imagine the exponentially massive explosion and will of life, nestled in the wee humble seed. . .I think not 🙂

  4. Oh my God such wisdom and Truth in this post Natalie. Yes, the Kingdom is a Seed… I especially love this holy parable and I can’t prevent from quoting it eventhough I know I know it by heart…
    “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field.
    It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”
    I’m going to tell you a secret, when I was a teenager I read Matthew’s Gospel, and cried, and parables gave me the shivers… I was (and I am still) just “entranced”… because I knew parables were the divine way to make the unspeakable understandable… and that the Unspeakable was so AMAZING… I’m so happy to be connected with you… my Angel NATALIE 🙂 ♥♥♥

    • Thank you for you kind words about my post, Cher. I nearly used the quote about the mustard seed for my Scripture at the bottom of the post. I guess I should have, huh?! I love parables too and you are right they do make the “unspeakable understandable.” You and I are a divine connection indeed, mon ami. We are a light on each other’s path! Just so you know though, my halo is not always on straight and/or shiny or in place at all for that matter. Hee hee! You flatter me, you delight me with your poetry and thoughts, and you make me laugh at times. It seems to me that you, monsieur, are the angelic one.   8. Natalie, thank you for the lovely reminder that seeds are tiny miracles. I’ve been fascinated by them from the time I planted my first garden in childhood.

    I adore old-fashioned seed packages.
