609. A poem begins in delight and ends in wisdom. ~Robert Frost

Nature was here a series of
wonders, and a fund of delight.

Every day
I see or hear
something
that more or less
kills me
with delight,
that leaves me
like a needle
in the haystack
of light.
It was what I was born for –
to look, to listen,
to lose myself
inside this soft world –
to instruct myself
over and over
in joy,
and acclamation.
Nor am I talking
about the exceptional,
the fearful, the dreadful,
the very extravagant –
but of the ordinary,
the common, the very drab,
the daily presentations.
Oh, good scholar,
I say to myself,
how can you help
but grow wise
with such teachings
as these –
the untrimmable light
of the world,
the ocean’s shine,
the prayers that are made
out of grass?
~Mary Oliver

Surely then you will find delight in the Almighty and will lift up your face to God. ~Job 22:26   ✝

  1. As always, Natalie, you bring me out of the dark and into the light. Such a lovely poem on the birth morning of my 3rd great-grandson. You touched me again.

  2. Absolutely stunning photo Natalie!!! And I love the quote from Robert Frost and Mary Oliver’s poem. Diving into delight each day! This is homework I’m excited to do! XD

BTW, what camera and lens do you use? It might be time for me to splurge.

  3. Yep— Joy, expectation and wonder are all just waiting–even on the darkest coldest windiest days of an endless winter—perspective, it’s all an issue of perspective—and I suspect your perspective is that of wily anticipation steeped in grand expectation 🙂
Here’s to wonderment which will be more readily available to you with a brand new knee 🙂
    Waves of warm love—-

  4. Don’t know how I missed this one, but sure glad it was recommended when you liked my post (thanks!) This is an exquisitely beautiful photo and delightfully true words from Mary Oliver, all pulled together by you, sweet lady. I now have the vision of each blade of grass being so many little prayers!
