646. I sing because I’m happy; I sing because I’m free. His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me. ~Excerpts from the song, His Eye is on the Sparrow, by Civilla D. Martin

If you hear a voice within you say
you cannot paint, then
by all means paint and
that voice will be silenced.

Write because you want to communicate with yourself.
Write because you want to communicate with someone else.
Write because life is weird and tragic and amazing.
Write because talking is difficult.
Write because it polishes the heart.
Write because you can.
Write because you can’t.
Write because you’re trying to figure yourself out.
Write because you might not ever figure yourself out.
Write because there still aren’t enough love poems in the world.
Write because there is a blackbird outside of my window right now
and oh my God isn’t that the best start to the day?

We are made in the image of God, the Creator of all life as well as the earth and the moon and the stars and the sun and the planets and the galaxies and the oceans and the trees and the forests and on and on and on all that Yahweh made goes. So I can’t help but believe there is indeed an internal voice in each of us that can only be silenced when we find an outlet for our creative urges. What holds many back I think is the fear that someone else will not like what they do and/or will laugh at them. But who are others to judge anyone else’s voice and its calling? Instead of simply watching and judging, everyone needs to be finding his or her own calling and begin silencing his and her own voices.  But then that takes courage and work while being an uncharitable “critic” requires neither of those things. The only ones we need ever please are ourselves and He who created the “voice” and its calling. So sing or write or paint or whatever it takes to silence not only the “voice” but also to fulfill your purpose.

  1. Natalie, this blessed me abundantly. Last night I sent off a large piece of creative work to be critiqued and potentially accepted or rejected. You’ve reminded me that it’s my job to create–not my job to worry. It’s in God’s hands. His judgement is what counts the most. ❤

    • Oh, I’m so glad this post was helpful in some way. Interestingly after I posted it I found a comment in my spam file. He said that the name of my blog was boring and I would do better to change it. But I don’t write for him so I just deleted his comment and moved on along. I write to please God and I’ll let Him take care of the naysayers. You are so right about it being only His judgment that counts. Blessing and love, N ❤ 🙂

  2. Oh Natalie, I love this. I write and I have written since I first learned how—not because I liked writing but because I wanted to communicate. When I was young, it was first in the diaries and journals of a young girl in which I would spend hours pouring out the thoughts and feelings of a young angst ridden heart that was trying so desperately to make sense of life. As I grew older, I continued wanting to write expressing my thoughts and feelings—and in part I think I wanted / want to be able to do so a a signpost to others in a feeble attempt to let others see, know, read that my heart is still here and still beating because of God and His Divine Mercy and Grace—mine is but a simple life and world—I do not have the platform, stage or talent to draw the attention of others—so I do so more quietly, more steadily, more methodically—simply here, along side you–
No we must not silence those whose voices may be small or timid–may we prayer for the ears and eyes to hear and see all that God would have us see and hear!!
    A wonderful post!!
    all my love—Julie

    • And you write so beautifully as a result of your longtime efforts to communicate through the written word. You express yourself very well and I adore what’s in that heart of yours. I don’t have a large platform either and am content to let the Lord send those my way whom He thinks might benefit from what I have to say. So yes, my sweet friend, alongside each other we’ll plod steadily along revealing our hearts that love Christ and want to share His glory and miracles with others. Hugs and love, N ❤ ❤ ❤

  3. Thank you Natalie. I write because I have to. Something inside me drives me to write, and God’s grace gave me the courage to begin posting some of it on a blog. I once would write it then destroy it, but now I post some of it, the rest is stacked in piles everywhere around my apartment. If my family wants to read it, it will be there for them. If not, they can destroy it. But if God gave me the ability, then He gave me the courage also, so now I write and share most of what I write, but still not all.
You have blessed me again with your words, so necessary for me to remember.

    • Oh don’t destroy what you write, Angie. The Lord places those thoughts and words in your spirit for a reason. There are people who need to hear your story and enjoy your sense of humor and straightforwardness. I’m so glad my post blessed you and hope it encourages you not to throw the gifts in your heart. Hugs and love, Natalie 🙂 ❤

      • Thanks Natalie. Since I got my first computer I’ve stored most of my stories on that, saving them to disks, flash drives, and whatever the latest ways to save are. Most are still safe, but some of the CD’s have deteriorated, the original floppies can no longer be used because the floppy is obsolete, but I keep them anyway, so they are not destroyed any more. So that means there is a lot of silly stuff stored away where someone will get a big surprise some day when they start opening those files to see what is on them–provided any of my kids ever wants to open the files. Sorry I’m so late answering this, but I’m behind on everything lately. Feeling better though, and getting some rest. Love and hugs, Angie

  4. Oh dear Natalie! I am happy I have found this comment box. I have been here many times but unable to tell you how delighted I was because I could not find it. Let me tell you that I find you such a sweet lady; and your work is amazing. I love it. I read with a smile what you said about this person who was rather negative about the title of your blog. You know Natalie, there are people who seem to have been born in negativity. They look at a large beautiful white wall with a dot and all they see is the little dot. I am happy you write for those who know how to appreciate beauty and for God. You write for those who are willing to open up to inspiring stuff in order to bring out the best in themselves. And many are those who love what you write. May you continue to be one of the candles of the world to shine and light up the world.
