706. Spring, the sweet Spring, is the year’s pleasant king… ~Thomas Nashe

The rose is a flower of love.
The world has acclaimed it for centuries.
Pink roses are for love hopeful and expectant.
White roses are for love, dead or forsaken,
but the red roses, all the red roses,
are for love triumphant.

Beauty is a form of genius –
is higher, indeed, than genius,
as it needs no explanation.
It is of the great facts in the world
like sunlight, or springtime,
or the reflection in dark water
of that silver shell we call the moon.
~Oscar Wilde

Earth, my dearest, I will.  Oh believe me, you no longer need your springtimes to win me over – one of them, ah, even one, is already too much for my blood.  Unspeakably, I have belonged to you, from the first. ~Rainer Maria Rilke

Rilke took the words right out of my mouth!  Earth is all we have, and it is more than enough, to bring us back to the Lord who made it.  Every bit of it–every creature, every flower, every tree, simply everything speaks of God’s glory and His love so that we cannot resist looking for Him and listening for His voice.  It was part of His plan, and it works well for to belong to the earth is to belong to Him.  These two photos are the last in my series of yard photos from my recliner.  The first is a close up of the small pink roses on the arch over the little porch outside my studio.  The second is farther away from that arch so you can see the size of a Cécile Brünner climbing rose somewhat.  Below it and in the background, the darker pink roses are on top of the smaller arch leading to the secret garden at the very back of my yard.  The third one can’t be seen from my recliner.  It, the entrance to the backyard, fills the window here by my computer with yet another pink climbing rose.

The highest heavens belong to the Lord, but the earth He has given to mankind. ~Psalm 115:16  ✝

  1. Gosh Natalie–your yard is a sanctuary —the arched trellis reminiscent of the gothic arch of an ancient Cathedral—as if it should cover an alter–the flowers accent the holy offering —so so lovely, inviting and a living testament of your own love and offering—thank you for this lovely example of communion—
    love to you my friend–julie

      • Well, let’s talk about that lovely part. In north central Texas where we are, it’s pretty nice most of the year, but July, August, and sometimes well into September or beyond, it is downright nasty for a girl like me who “no likey” the heat AT ALL!!! I was born in California and didn’t move here until my teens, and I’ve hated those months ever since. My mom who was from here always used to say, “Oh honey, you’ll get used to it after awhile.” She was 92 when she died ad she was still telling me that. Now 10 years later, I’m still not used to it and am NEVER going to be used to it. Now, why, might you ask am I still living here then??? Well, I married a born and bred Texan who only revealed after he married me that he would never live anywhere else. Then our child was born here and now she and her family live here.
So what’s a girl gonna do? Stay where her family and the love is! So, should you actually ever come here, don’t come then. Not only is it miserably hot but most of beautiful blooming things suffer as miserably as I do in the heat. Some die and the ones that survive do have a bit of a revival in the fall. This is probably more than you wanted to know, but I never miss an opportunity to complain about the heat. Hee hee. Love, N 🙂 ❤

  3. Thank you for the beautiful post! I’m helping my mom out as she recovers from her knee replacement surgery. I’m mindful of your recovery and pray that it is going well—and that your dancing shoes are ever at the ready! 🙂 Hugs ~ Laura

    • You’re welcome, Laura. Oh I pray your mom has as easy a time of it as I had. It really wasn’t bad at all.
It was 7 weeks for me last Thursday, and I’m out working in the yard some these days. My walk still is quite as smooth as it should be, but hobbling around on that bad knee for over a year has made me continue to favor my right foot. But I’ll get better as I keep walking. I couldn’t do a two-step or the cotton-eyed-Joe yet, but I think I could do pretty well with a nice little waltz. We are only about 9 weeks out now from our trip to Paris and the Rhine river cruise, so I starting to make plans for that. Our kids and grandkids are going on to Italy while James and I do Paris. So we can move slowly and rest in between jaunts while in Paris this time. And if we want to just sit along the Seine and watch the sun come up or go down, well we shall just guiltlessly spend as much time as we like doing that. Then on the River Cruise we’ll join back up with them for the last five days of our trip.
Let me know how things are going with your mom.
Doing the rehab and exercises will make a huge difference. They did for me. Hugs, N 🙂 ❤

    • Ya did, huh?! This area really is a fairly nice place to live except for July and August!!! Oh man, do I hate those two months. I’m surprised you don’t hear all my pissin’ and moanin’ about it even way down under. Do you have any climbing roses on your place, Sir L? I have lots of climbing things including the roses. I love to grow vertically as well as horizontally. Love’n hugs right back at ya, Sir L. LMS 🙂 ❤

      • I’ve been hearing a faint whining noise in July and August, now I know where it’s coming from. 😉 I don’t have any climbing roses but I have a bed prepared for 16 roses come winter. Things that climb seem to be enjoyed by the local wildlife.
        Love’n Hugs
        Laurence.
