Many miles away there’s a shadow
on the door of a cottage
on the Shore of a dark Scottish lake.
~Sir Walter Scott

Let there be a cottage….a real cottage…a white cottage, embowered with flowering shrubs, so chosen as to unfold a succession of flowers upon the walls, and clustering round the windows through all the months of spring, summer, and autumn—beginning, in fact, with May roses, and ending with jasmine. Let it, however, not be spring, nor summer, nor autumn—but winter, in his sternest shape. This is a most important point in the science of happiness. And I am surprised to see people overlook it, and think it matter of congratulation that winter is going; or, if coming, is not likely to be a severe one. On the contrary, I put up a petition annually, for as much snow, hail, frost, or storm, of one kind or other, as the skies can possibly afford us. Surely every body is aware of the divine pleasures which attend a winter fire-side: candles at four o’clock, warm hearth-rugs, tea, a fair tea-maker, shutters closed, curtains flowing in ample draperies on the floor, whilst the wind and rain are raging audibly without… ~Thomas De Quincey

Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures and all ocean depths, lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy winds that do his bidding, you mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars… ~Psalm 148:7-9 ✝

Thank you, Trini! You are so welcome. I was sad to see the snow go away from my blog today so I decided to write about it. 🙂 ❤

There’s a cottage, somewhere in a remote village near Dingle or up in County Donegal, Ireland with my name on it. 5 sheep–white bodies with black faces. They wait for me.
The grass is truly that brilliant green—there is an ocean of wildflowers with the smell of the sea drifting in the breeze. The cottage is warm, cozy and inviting–a fire of dried peat burns on the hearth and the cottage is filled with the scent of freshly baked bread—I hold this thought in my head musing delightfully on the good days and hold to it fast and tight on those bad days—those long dark days of winter’s emptiness—
there’s a chair by that hearth with your name on it 🙂

Oh, Julie. This made tears well up in my eyes. You painted the most delicious picture of that little cottage! Then when I got to the part about you placing a chair by the hearth for me, I was so touched. Just tell me when to come and I’ll be there! Love and hugs, N 🙂 ❤

My house is small, surrounded by lots of green, growing things, so sometimes I refer to it as a cottage.

I love your garden and enjoy Thomas Kincaid’s book. Did you know he was raised by a single mom and longed to have lights in his window? And not dark while mom was gone. I like that story. It explains his lighthouses and lighted windows. 🙂 ♡

Beautiful. We have a very small garden just down from the park and it is a haven to sit and just enjoy and smell the roses and in my case take thousands of photos. Heaven on earth for me.

Oh, I’m so glad you have a garden close by. I love to sit in gardens too and just soak up all the sights and sounds and smells. And of course take photos. It is heaven on earth as far as I’m concerned too.
