Man oh man am I up to my “derrière” in weeds. After the huge amount of rain we had last spring, more weeds than ever sprang up, and they are EVERYWHERE. I was already losing the battle with them when we left for Europe on the 22nd of June; then after we got home nearly three weeks later, they had grown exponentially denser and bigger.

So in this awful heat I’ve been going out when I can to save my flowers from being overcome by their immensity and girth. However, since many have already dropped seeds that will lie dormant until next year, I’ve essentially already lost next year’s battle too. Oh well, if one wants beds and beds of pretty flowers and/or veggies, a weeding one must go, right?! But, ya know, it’s not so much the backbreaking work of pulling or digging them up that’s a problem; it’s this relentless, searing heat that sends me grumbling back in the house dripping with sweat from head to toe and in clothes that are wet down to my underwear.

  4. Working the garden in this heat is no joke.

    My usual 20 minute to and from the train which gave me adequate exercise daily has now been replaced by a 5 minute bus ride because the heat is just too much.

    I sympathize and hope there is some other way to control those weeds that can bring some relief as the season wears on. I heard you mention landscaping fabric in a recent post, can’t this be used as you weed to help prevent regrowth of the areas you’ve already cleared?

    I know the end result is breath-taking to behold but the work of getting there requires such discipline that I commend your efforts.

    All I have is a little window garden in which I’m trying to grow tomatoes and sweet peppers — the tomatoes are growing but not the sweet peppers so I’m guessing they need better soil. Oh well, will keep trying…

    • Thanks. When I started gardening years ago I didn’t know about landscaping fabric. Sure wish I had though. I do use it now when I create a new growing space. I love the end result and so will push forward. I’ve actually gotten about a third of it done. Oh yes, I do stay hydrated for sure. Hugs, N 🙂 ❤
