Roots of the weed sucked first
life from the genesis of earth
and hold the essence of it still.
Always the weed returns; and
the cultured plant retreats before it.
~Beryl Markham
They know, they just know where to grow,
how to dupe you, and how to camouflage themselves
among the perfectly respectable plants,
they just know, and therefore, I’ve concluded
weeds must have brains.
~Dianne Benson
Man oh man am I up to my “derrière” in weeds. After the huge amount of rain we had last spring, more weeds than ever sprang up, and they are EVERYWHERE. I was already losing the battle with them when we left for Europe on the 22nd of June; then after we got home nearly three weeks later, they had grown exponentially denser and bigger.
Sweet flowers are slow and weeds make haste. ~William Shakespeare
So in this awful heat I’ve been going out when I can to save my flowers from being overcome by their immensity and girth. However, since many have already dropped seeds that will lie dormant until next year, I’ve essentially already lost next year’s battle too. Oh well, if one wants beds and beds of pretty flowers and/or veggies, a weeding one must go, right?! But, ya know, it’s not so much the backbreaking work of pulling or digging them up that’s a problem; it’s this relentless, searing heat that sends me grumbling back in the house dripping with sweat from head to toe and in clothes that are wet down to my underwear.
By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust are you and to dust you will return. ~Genesis 3:19 ✝

I empathize and share the same challenge, Natalie, but your photos of flowers are such a beautiful gift 🙂

I figured my lament was probably a pretty universal one, Cindy. 🙂 ❤

Working the garden in this heat is no joke.
My usual 20 minute to and from the train which gave me adequate exercise daily has now been replaced by a 5 minute bus ride because the heat is just too much.
I sympathize and hope there is some other way to control those weeds that can bring some relief as the season wears on. I heard you mention landscaping fabric in a recent post, can’t this be used as you weed to help prevent regrowth of the areas you’ve already cleared?
I know the end result is breath-taking to behold but the work of getting there requires such discipline that I commend your efforts.
All I have is a little window garden in which I’m trying to grow tomatoes and sweet peppers — the tomatoes are growing but not the sweet peppers so I’m guessing they need better soil. Oh well, will keep trying…
Best wishes to you, be safe, stay hydrated 🙂

Thanks. When I started gardening years ago I didn’t know about landscaping fabric. Sure wish I had though. I do use it now when I create a new growing space. I love the end result and so will push forward. I’ve actually gotten about a third of it done. Oh yes, I do stay hydrated for sure. Hugs, N 🙂 ❤

Ooh, I’ll bet they are good tomatoes. I haven’t tried any veggies lately as my husband is refusing to give up any more of his grass. 🙂 🙂

Natalie–I wage that same hot battle with my yard nemesis–and yes—sweat soaked down to my underwear—but such is the labor of love 🙂
Happy sweating my friend 🙂 hugs from scorching Nashville—travelin’ cookie

I thought my lament was more than likely a universal one, so onward and upward we go a weeding, my friend. It seems to be scorching all over the southern states as usual and there is no rain in sight here. Take care traveling Cookie. Love and hugs, N 🙂 ❤

That is so true. Gardens take so much work, but they are so worth it. Not for the lazy for sure.

Same story here. I love the quote about gardening being a balance of weeds and wonder. Happy hunting! 🙂

Yeppers, it’s a pretty universal lament, Brad. I liked that quote too, and if it weren’t true I’d sure as heck not do all that weeding. Hugs, N 🙂 ❤
