My Mom called these Maypops. She said when she was little they grew all over the place where she lived. According to her, the pods produced before blooming were good to eat, and she ate a LOT of them!
I didn’t either until she told me. I had also heard they were hard to grow and expensive to buy. She said they had hundreds!
Mom finally got one for her yard (in their new house), and it took off like crazy. Just before she and my Dad passed away, they all died (we had an extremely cold winter that year and lost a lot of plants), so I wasn’t able to get a cutting.
Enjoy yours, they are so pretty and have an interesting legend behind them, too.
Blessings~
