Natalie, the hollyhocks in your ‘yard’ are lovely and obviously do very well. What would you say are the prerequisites for good plants with such beautiful blooms? For a start, shelter I guess – always a consideration in windy NZ! What else?
We’ve had a lot of wind this spring and they have done well and the burgundy colored one are towering over everything at about 10 feet I think. As with all things they need good soil and moisture and the right amount of sun. Sun requirements are different for lots of things. My hollyhocks are getting some shade at times but they are getting enough sun it seems. They are easy to start from seed and the seed packet should tell you what their needs are. Happy growing Liz❣️😘
